Maintenance Guide
Daily maintenance
Vacuuming
To extend the lifespan of your Ecorug, vacuum it from the day of purchase, at least once a week. Check at least once a month whether the dust filter needs cleaning or the vacuum cleaner needs replacing.
Use a standard vacuum cleaner.
Never clean your Ecorug with an electrically driven rotating-brush vacuum cleaner: this may damage the surface fibres.
Interim maintenance
Manual cleaning with James Interior Cleaner
You can clean your Ecorug yourself using a cotton terry towel and the ‘James Interior Cleaner' detergent from our partner James.
james.eu — James Interior Cleaner
If you treat your Ecorug regularly from the day of purchase with James Interior Cleaner, it will stay looking nice for longer. This surface cleaner effectively maintains the fibres, keeps your Ecorug fresh and prevents it from looking greyish.
Beating the rug
If your Ecorug is easy to lift, shake it outside, hang it on a clothesline and beat it, preferably on its back. Then bring it back inside and vacuum it following our daily maintenance instructions.
Maintenance by a professional cleaner
If you have your Ecorug cleaned at a dry cleaner, give them the link to this document so they can follow the washing and maintenance recommendations below.
Your Ecorug is eligible for interim cleaning when walkways caused by local soiling become so disturbing that vacuuming no longer gives a satisfactory result. If you cannot — or do not wish to — clean your rug by hand, a professional cleaning company can do so using the following methods.
Pad cleaning — single-disc machine only
Pad cleaning (Bonnet system) can be carried out with a single-disc machine fitted with a Bonnet pad and a suitable detergent.
Spray extraction
No counter-rotating brush powder machine.
No spray-extraction machine with rotating nozzles.
Removing stains
Stains should preferably be treated immediately.
Fresh stains
Immediately moisten a cotton cloth with cold water, wring it out and place it on the stain. Leave it in place, without peeking, until it is dry. Do not dab or rub, as this may permanently damage your Ecorug. Never use soap!
Persistent stains
Treat according to the instructions on the James Staindisc or the James website. You will find more than 5,000 different stain solutions! James Stainwonder, James Stainspray and James Interior Cleaner have been tested on our Ecorugs.
Washing instructions
Your Ecorug is machine washable! Follow the instructions below.
- ✓Remove the label on the back, but keep it: you will need it for our ‘Take Back Program'.
- ✓Wash by hand or in the machine at max. 30 °C, gentle or moderate programme, with reduced spin (max. 600 rpm).
- ✓Dry flat (dripping) or hanging.
The heat alters the colours.
Unnecessary and risky for the rug.
Changes the colours.
Drum capacity by size
Use a machine whose capacity (drum capacity, in kg) suits the size of your Ecorug. Overloading creates too much friction and can damage the fibres. Larger sizes are usually available at a launderette.

Prevention is better
- ✓Place a mat at the entrance to trap dirt and change your air filters to reduce suspended dust particles.
- ✓Regularly turn your Ecorug 180° to alternate the most walked-on side: it will wear more evenly.
- ✓To store it, roll it front-side out and wrap it in a cloth. Do not fold it or store it in an airtight plastic bag.
On hard floors (wood, stone, natural stone): after cleaning with soap, rinse thoroughly with clean water. Dried soap residues are carried onto the rug by shoe soles and soil it more quickly.
After cleaning the floor, make sure the area under the Ecorug is completely dry: residues can change the characteristics of the top or bottom side. Louis De Poortere is not responsible for damage to the floor; use a certified underlay to protect it.
