We ship with GLS, UPS, DPD, DHL or TNT, chosen by the size and weight of your rug. Very wide rugs and rolls travel with a specialist freight carrier, which does not provide a track and trace number — for those, we contact you directly to arrange delivery.

You receive a tracking number by email as soon as your rug leaves our warehouse in Mouscron. Allow up to 12 hours for the first scan to appear. You can follow the parcel at any time through our tracking page, or under “My orders” in your account.

Rugs that are not in stock are made to order, which takes up to 6 weeks. You are charged at the time of ordering and we confirm the expected dispatch date by email. If the wait does not suit you, contact us within 14 days and we will cancel and refund in full.

We dispatch Monday to Friday and do not offer weekend delivery. Once your parcel is with the carrier, most carriers let you reschedule or redirect it through the tracking link.

Customs clearance is handled automatically and there is nothing for you to arrange. UK VAT is calculated and shown in your cart as soon as you select the United Kingdom as the destination, so the price you see at checkout is the price you pay on delivery.

Screens vary, and our rugs use woven colour gradations that no screen reproduces perfectly. For anything where the shade matters, order an A4 sample for €3,50 and check it in your own room, in daylight and in the evening — it is the only reliable way to judge colour, and it costs less than a return.

Yes. Samples are A4-sized pieces of the actual rug, cost €3,50, and can be ordered from any product page. They show you the true colour, the texture and the 3 mm flatweave in your own light.

Samples are sent by post and typically arrive within 3 to 7 working days depending on your country. They are sent separately from any rug order.

Room photographs are shot under studio or daylight conditions that will not match your home, and our woven gradations shift noticeably with the light and the angle you view them from. This is a property of the weave rather than a fault — the same rug genuinely looks different at 9am and at 9pm. A sample lets you see that range before you commit.

Yes. Rugs are folded for shipping and creases are normal on arrival. Lay the rug flat, ideally in a warm room or in sunlight, and the creases settle within a few days. Do not iron the rug to remove them — the only ironing we permit is on the back, at low temperature, to reattach a heat-sealed band (see 5.5).

Yes, within 30 days of delivery. The rug must be unwashed, undamaged and in the condition you received it. Applies to EcoRugs, Dropout and Outlet alike.

Return shipping is at your expense: approximately €15 for rugs up to 200 cm long and €30 for rugs over 200 cm. The cost is deducted from your refund. If a rug arrives faulty or incorrect, we cover the return in full.

Go to “My orders” in your account and click “Return items”, or email us. You receive a return number and a link, from which you choose either a drop-off point or a collection from your address, and print your label.

Choose the home collection option when you set up your return and the carrier comes to you. For rugs over two metres, fold the rug in half and box it if you can — this makes collection considerably easier. You remain responsible for returning the rug in the condition you received it. (Folding is fine for a short transport; for long-term storage, roll the rug instead — see 5.11.)

Within 30 days of the rug reaching our warehouse in Mouscron, and usually well inside that. Refunds go back to your original payment method, minus the return shipping cost.

Every rug carries the statutory two-year guarantee of conformity, which covers faults present at the time of delivery. On top of that we offer a commercial guarantee against manufacturing and weaving faults. Your statutory rights are not affected by anything in our commercial guarantee.

It covers manufacturing faults — material and weaving defects — under normal domestic use. It does not cover normal wear, damage from misuse or aggressive cleaning products, or problems caused by the floor underneath the rug. Following the care instructions keeps your cover intact.

As a rule, the rug should sit under at least the front legs of your sofa and armchairs, so the seating reads as one group. For a standard three-seat sofa that usually means 200 × 290 cm; for a larger open-plan room, go up rather than down. A rug that is too small makes the room look smaller.

Allow at least 60 cm of rug beyond every edge of the table, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For a six-person table that is typically 200 × 290 cm; for eight people, 250 × 350 cm. Our 3 mm flatweave is well suited to dining rooms because chairs move over it easily and crumbs do not lodge in the pile.

For a double bed, a rug that extends around 60 to 90 cm past the sides and foot of the bed gives you something soft underfoot on both sides — usually 200 × 290 cm or larger. A common alternative is two runners, one either side of the bed.

Yes — EcoRugs and Dropout rugs are machine washable at a maximum of 30 °C. Wash on a gentle or moderate programme with the spin reduced to 600 rpm or less, and dry the rug flat or hanging, never in a tumble dryer. Before you wash, remove the label from the back of the rug and keep it: you need it to use the Take Care take-back programme. Outlet rugs are not machine washable.

It depends on your machine's drum capacity, which is printed on the machine. Sizes up to and including 140 × 140 fit any machine from 5 kg. 170 × 240 needs at least 7 kg; 200 × 280 needs 8 kg; 240 × 240 needs 9 kg; 240 × 340 needs 11 kg; and 280 × 390 needs 15 kg, which in practice means a self-service laundry. Do not force a rug into a drum that is too small — overloading creates friction that damages it.

Wash at a maximum of 30 °C on a gentle or moderate programme, with the spin speed reduced to 600 rpm or less. Use a mild liquid detergent and wash the rug on its own. No bleach and no fabric softener — bleach will alter the colours. Hand washing is also fine.

No. Tumble drying is not permitted: the higher drying temperatures affect the colours. Dry the rug flat, or hang it and let it drip dry.

No, with one exception. Never iron the front of the rug and never iron out creases — ironing temperatures will damage it. The single permitted use is on the back: if the heat-sealed band partially detaches during washing, put it back in position and iron it on an ironing board at no more than 110 °C.

Almost certainly not. Two things are normal after a wash. The heat-sealed band on the back can partially come away — put it back in place and iron it on the back at a maximum of 110 °C. And the backing can show slight wear. Neither affects the visible side of the rug or its quality.

Act immediately, and do not rub. Moisten a cotton cloth with cold water, wring it out, lay it on the stain and leave it there untouched until it is dry — dabbing and rubbing can cause permanent damage. Never use soap. For anything that remains, our cleaning partner James lists more than 5,000 stain solutions at james.eu, and a machine wash at 30 °C removes most household stains. If you are unsure what to do, do nothing and let the stain dry.

Vacuum at least once a week from the day the rug arrives, and more often in busy rooms — this is the single biggest factor in how long it lasts. Do not use a vacuum with an electrically driven rotating brush: a beater bar damages the surface fibres. Check the dust filter monthly. The flatweave has no deep pile to trap dirt, so a light pass is enough.

Yes, and doing it regularly from day one is what stops a rug taking on a grey cast. Spray James Interior Cleaner onto the area, then rub it dry with a dry white cotton terry towel in wide sweeping strokes; if soiling transfers to the towel, keep going. If the rug is light enough to lift, you can also shake it outside, hang it on a line and beat it on the back, then vacuum it.

Yes, by two methods. Pad (bonnet) cleaning with a single-disc machine run slowly, at 120 to 180 rpm, or spray extraction with a straight nozzle bar using no more than 12 litres of water per m². Powder cleaning with a counter-rotating brush machine, and rotating-nozzle extraction (Rotovac), will damage the rug — send your cleaner our maintenance guide. Whichever method is used, put furniture back only once the rug is completely dry, or you risk brown staining.

Roll it, front side out, and wrap it in a cloth. Do not fold a rug for storage and do not seal it in a tight plastic bag. Make sure it is completely dry before you put it away.

Turn the rug 180° roughly once a year so it wears evenly and sun exposure is spread across the whole surface. Put a mat at your front door to trap grit before it reaches the rug. And if you have hard flooring, rinse it with clean water after washing it with soap — dried soap residue travels onto rugs on shoe soles and makes them soil far faster.

Louis De Poortere is a Belgian rug manufacturer, family-owned and now in its fourth generation, weaving in Mouscron since 1929. We design and weave our own rugs in our own factory rather than buying them in, and we sell directly to customers in more than ten countries as well as through retailers across Europe. Our current collection, EcoRugs, is a single-material flatweave that is machine washable and fully recyclable.

Four things, and only one of them is common in this market. The rug is built entirely from one material — yarn, latex backing, bindings and labels are all polyester — which is what makes it genuinely recyclable rather than downcyclable, and the technique behind it was developed and patented by our own R&D team in Mouscron. It can go in the washing machine. It comes back to us free at the end of its life through Take Care. And it is woven on our own Jacquard looms in Belgium, in colours drawn from a bank of 250 shades that we rebuilt from scratch when we moved from cotton to polyester.

Look at five things. Is it woven or tufted — weaving locks the fibre into the structure, tufting glues it in, and a tufted rug will shed. What is the backing made of, and is it a different material from the pile, because that decides whether the rug can ever be recycled. What does it weigh per square metre — density is what stops a rug crushing under furniture. Is the colour fast, or will it fade and rub off. And can you actually clean it, or will the first serious spill end it. Price on its own tells you very little.

In Mouscron, Belgium, in our own factory, where we have been weaving since 1929. Design, weaving and finishing all happen in-house, on our own looms.

Our EcoRugs are made entirely from polyester — yarn, latex backing, bindings and labels — with 70% recycled polyester (rPET) in the current collection. Building the whole rug from a single material is the point, not a detail: it is what makes it recyclable without separating components, and the technique is patented and came out of our own R&D team. They are Jacquard-woven on Belgian looms and finished in our factory in Mouscron, where we have been weaving since 1929. The construction is a 3 mm flatweave with an anti-slip latex backing.

For most homes, polyester performs better on the things that decide how long a rug lasts. Our own testing shows cotton wears roughly three times as fast as polyester, and polyester holds colour better, resists stains, and does not felt or shrink when it gets wet. It is also the only one of the three you can put in a washing machine. Wool remains warmer and softer underfoot, which is why we keep wool ranges such as Richelieu in our collection.

Both are synthetics, but they behave differently. Polypropylene does not absorb water at all, which makes it common in cheap outdoor rugs, but it takes colour less richly and feels coarser. Polyester holds deep, complex colour — which is what our Jacquard weaving is for — and, unlike polypropylene, can be recycled repeatedly into new rugs without losing quality.

Because we spent two years rebuilding it. The chenille yarn we used in cotton had to be recreated in polyester, and the hardest part was matching the colourfastness of a bank of 250 shades exactly — the new product only went to market once every one of them was right. Polyester takes deep, complex colour far better than the polypropylene used in most synthetic rugs, which is what makes the Jacquard weaving worth doing.

Under normal domestic use, expect a service life well beyond the five years we use as the baseline in our carbon calculations. A dense Jacquard flatweave has no long pile to crush, and polyester recovers its shape better than wool or cotton under furniture and foot traffic. Vacuuming regularly and turning the rug once a year makes the largest difference.

Far less than a deep-pile rug, because there is very little pile to flatten — the rug is 3 mm thick. Furniture will leave temporary marks; these lift with vacuuming and by moving the furniture slightly from time to time.

No. Our rugs are woven rather than tufted or knitted, so the fibres are locked into the structure and there are no cut ends to work loose. This is also why they shed very few microfibres compared with tufted rugs.

For slipping, no underlay is needed: every rug has an anti-slip latex backing, and the weight of the weave — 1,500 g/m² — keeps it flat on the floor. On very smooth surfaces such as polished concrete, a thin grip pad can still help. For protecting the floor underneath, particularly wood, stone or natural stone, we do recommend a certified underlay, and we cannot accept responsibility for damage to the floor beneath a rug.

Yes. There is no long pile for claws to catch, spills sit on the surface rather than soaking in, and EcoRugs and Dropout rugs can be machine washed at 30 °C after an accident. Outlet rugs are not washable, so for a household with young animals we would point you to the current collections.

Yes — EcoRugs, Dropout and Outlet rugs are all compatible with underfloor heating, and at 3 mm the rug barely insulates the floor.

EcoRugs and Dropout rugs from the Indoor & Outdoor range are colour-fast under prolonged sun, water-repellent, resistant to mould and mildew, and quick-drying. Bring the rug in over winter, make sure it is completely dry, and store it rolled front-side out in a cloth rather than folded or bagged. Outlet rugs are indoor only.

There is no deep pile to hold dust, and the rug can be washed at 30 °C, which removes far more than vacuuming alone. Our rugs are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified and independently tested against VOC standards, so they do not affect indoor air quality.

Yes — the 3 mm flatweave is designed for exactly these situations. It lies flush under doors, chairs roll and slide over it without catching, and it does not trap crumbs the way a deep pile does. We are Circular Hotel Interior certified and increasingly work in the contract market, where the single-material construction and the take-back route are the reason projects choose us.

It depends on the collection, and the proportion has risen every year. Our current EcoRugs collection is 70% recycled polyester. Dropout, the previous year's EcoRugs, is 40%. Two collection years before that we were at 20%. We are working towards 100% by 2030. Outlet rugs are older stock or other brands and carry no recycled-content claim.

Because a rug's impact depends far more on how long it lasts and what happens to it afterwards than on whether the fibre started out natural. Cotton carries a heavy water and land burden and, in our own testing, wears roughly three times as fast. Polyester lets us build the entire rug — yarn, backing, bindings, labels — from a single material, which is what makes genuine recycling possible.

A 170 × 240 EcoRug in recycled polyester, returned to us through Take Care, works out at 20 kg CO₂e per year of use, against 56 kg for the cotton rug we made ourselves until 2023 — 64% lower. Part of that is because the end-of-life stage comes out negative, at −17 kg: the rug becomes raw material instead of waste. The analysis was carried out phase by phase by two independent bodies, Centexbel and the University of Liège, under the official PEF and EPD methods.

In the factory. Making an EcoRug emits roughly as much CO₂ as making the cotton rug we used to make — the manufacturing phase is not where we win. The gain sits in the raw material, in a rug that lasts longer, and in an end of life that produces new yarn instead of waste. We would rather tell you that ourselves than have you find it in the report.

The whole rug is one material, which is the reason it can be recycled rather than downcycled. Polyester does not degrade meaningfully through recycling, so the fibre returns as rug yarn rather than as stuffing or insulation. We run this through our Take Care programme with specialist polyester recyclers in Europe.

Take Care is our take-back scheme: when your rug reaches the end of its life with you, scan the QR code on the label and we arrange a free return. Rugs still in good condition are cleaned, reconditioned and resold second-hand; the rest go to our recycling partners and come back as new yarn. Available for EcoRugs and Dropout. Keep the label you remove before washing — it is what you need to use the programme.

The EU and the United Kingdom. We are working on extending it to other regions, but only where the return journey does not cancel out the benefit of recycling.

You can, but it is unlikely to be recycled as a rug. Most household recycling facilities cannot sort or process polyester textiles, so it will typically be downcycled or incinerated for energy recovery. Take Care is the route that returns the material to new rug yarn.

Woven rugs shed far less than tufted or knitted textiles, because the fibres are locked into the weave with no cut ends. A rug is also washed a handful of times over its life, against dozens for clothing — and most shedding happens in the first few washes.

Several parties — and not all of it. The life-cycle analysis was carried out by Centexbel and the University of Liège under the official PEF and EPD methods. OEKO-TEX audits that we genuinely use recycled PET and that recycled yarn is kept strictly separated from non-recycled yarn. Every yarn supplier is contractually required to hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, and all recycled polyester arrives under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). The honest limit is this: the exact recycled percentage we publish is on our own responsibility, because no external verification of that quantity exists in this industry today. We would rather say so than imply an audit that nobody performs.

We are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which tests the rug for harmful substances and air emissions; our recycled polyester is sourced under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), and every one of our yarn suppliers is contractually required to be OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified; and our production is ISO 9001 certified. We are also Circular Hotel Interior certified and a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Our packaging is 100% recycled. We rebuilt the shipping label system to use half the plastic, paper and ink it used to, and smaller sizes no longer ship in cardboard tubes at all. Behind the scenes we worked out a returnable pallet system with each of our carriers — UPS, DHL, DPD, GLS and FedEx — so pallets come back to us or are replaced with the carrier's own trolleys, rather than being thrown away.
